Pain Management

Keeping your pet pain-free is essential to maintaining their quality of life. At VCA Peone Pines Animal Hospital, we offer advanced pain management to help pets in Spokane, Mead, Chattaroy, Colbert, Deer Park, Elk, and the surrounding areas to recover and live pain-free lives.

Safe and Effective Pain Management

Pets metabolize medications differently than humans, making it crucial to only use drugs specifically prescribed for your pet. Never give human medications to your pet without veterinarian approval, as they can be toxic or even fatal.

Veterinary medicine has evolved significantly in how pain is managed. Research shows that adequate pain control improves recovery outcomes for both pets and people. Ensuring your pet receives proper pain management helps them heal faster and feel more comfortable throughout the healing process.

Comprehensive Pain Relief Strategies

We use a multi-modal approach to pain management, combining advanced techniques and medications, including:

  • Anti-inflammatories to reduce swelling and discomfort
  • Opioid medications used for moderate to severe pain relief
  • Local and general anesthetics to block pain during and after procedures
  • Therapeutic laser therapy: A non-invasive option to reduce inflammation and promote healing
  • Epidural anesthesia for targeted pain relief in specific regions

For pets under anesthesia or hospitalized with painful conditions, we utilize constant rate infusion (CRI) infusions to provide constant pain relief.

Preventing and Managing Chronic Pain

If your pet is experiencing acute pain, our goal is to prevent the nerves from perceiving and remembering the pain, reducing the risk of it becoming chronic. For pets already dealing with chronic pain, we tailor our pain management plans based on their specific needs and medical history.

Our team approaches pain control by offering:

  • Joint Supplements Joint supplements such as Adequan and glucosamine to support joint health and mobility.
  • Injections – Low-dose injections of advanced medications to reduce pain sensitivity and prevent "wind-up" (a worsening pain response over time).
  • Alternative Referral Therapies – Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, or physical therapy are integrative pain relief options that may benefit your pet. If your pet can benefit from these additional therapies, we can provide local referral options to pursue these treatments.

Managing Osteoarthritis with Librela and Solensia

Pets suffering from chronic osteoarthritis (OA) can experience significant pain relief with Librela (for dogs) and Solensia (for cats). These long-acting monoclonal antibody treatments target nerve growth factor (NGF), a key driver of osteoarthritis pain, providing sustained relief with monthly injections.
